Creative Community

My Grandmother Perdue taught me to crochet first.  Then she taught me to quilt.  I remember waking on summer mornings to the smell of fresh brewed coffee and the voices of Grandmother and her friends as they sat together and quilted.  She always had a quilt in progress.  The quilt frame was a constant fixture right smack dab in the middle of her living room.
The women around the quilting frame shared their lives...their joys, their disappointments, their fears. Sometimes they only stayed for a little while, stopping by to get their day started, to touch base. Wednesday was "quilting day" at the church. Everyone brought a sack lunch and a dessert to share. There was always laughter and sometimes even a few tears. Occasionally there was conflict. It was creative community and that is what many of us are hungry for these days.

We've lost a lot in the busy-ness of this world but it doesn't have to be that way.  We can choose to reach out, to make time, to get in touch.  I'm making it a priority from now on.  Care to join me?

  1. Hi Janice, what a lovely evocative post. I could almost see your Grandmother and her friends and what beautiful work they did. I'm in... white with sugar and do you have a spare needle?

  3. I really loved this post Janice!
My Grandma had a quilting frame hanging in her dining/den area, for as long as I could remember!
Funny thing is...I never did really learn to quilt, though I was always intrigued by the beautiful, colorful fabric pieces she had cut up for those quilts! She taught me a lot about sewing and other needle arts and I watched her top stitch many a quilt, but I've never tried making one myself and it's something I definitely want to do one day!
You've helped bring back such great memories for me!

    1. I have a feeling my Grandmother might have taken my stitches out sometimes after I left :-) She and her friends were real perfectionists! I'm glad the post brought up happy memories. A lot of Ashley's journal prompts have done that for me.
